For more than 25 years, Gerald "Jerry" Townsend has been a familiar face within the UHY International network. From his first UHY conference in Washington DC in 2000 to his current role as a member of the UHY International Board of Directors and network Treasurer, he has witnessed an extraordinary period of growth, increasing collaboration and rising quality standards across the organisation. Today, alongside his international responsibilities, Jerry serves as Group Director of UHY in the United States and sits on the firm's National Management Committee.
Having joined the firm in 1987, Jerry has built a career centred on helping privately held businesses navigate growth, acquisitions, succession planning and international expansion. His experience spans decades of change within both the profession and the global business landscape, giving him a unique perspective on how UHY has evolved and where it is heading next.
A network that never stands still
When Jerry reflects on his early years within UHY International, the scale of change is clear.
"The network has certainly gotten bigger," he says. "The countries we cover have expanded, but more importantly, the quality of the firms continues to improve."
While growth in numbers is important, Jerry believes UHY's progress is about much more than geographical reach. Over the years, he has seen member firms become increasingly connected and aligned, creating stronger opportunities for collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
"Our connectivity has come a long, long way. We work together well, and the expectations we have of one another continue to grow. That's a good thing."
This culture of continuous improvement is something Jerry sees as fundamental to UHY's success. Throughout its history, the network has continued to challenge itself, invest in quality and strengthen relationships across borders.
"We've gone through a number of strategic initiatives over the years, and every time we do, I think we get stronger and better."
For Jerry, that mindset mirrors the advice he has given clients throughout his own career. Organisations that continue to evolve, embrace change and look for ways to improve are often the ones best positioned for long-term success.
Seeing opportunity in growth
Growth has been a recurring theme throughout Jerry's professional journey.
In addition to helping clients expand their businesses, he has been closely involved in the continued growth of UHY in the United States. Whether through mergers, strategic expansion or broadening service capabilities, he understands the opportunities that growth can create for both clients and people.
That same enthusiasm extends to UHY International.
For Jerry, a larger and stronger network creates opportunities for member firms to share expertise, support increasingly international clients and build relationships that deliver lasting value.
As the business world becomes more interconnected, he believes those opportunities will only continue to grow.
What makes a great leader?
Having worked with professionals from around the world, Jerry believes great leadership starts with a quality that is often underestimated.
"The ability to listen to others is critically important."
While technical expertise and commercial understanding remain essential, he believes the strongest leaders are those who are open to different viewpoints and willing to learn from others.
He also places great importance on developing a global perspective.
"It's very easy to become siloed into your country, your service line, your firm or your region. The really good leaders have a broad perspective on the things that are important across the globe."
For Jerry, leadership is about understanding how decisions affect not only an individual team or office, but the wider organisation and, increasingly, an international client base.
That broader outlook is becoming ever more important as businesses navigate economic uncertainty, technological change and increasingly global markets.
Investing in future talent
Developing the next generation of professionals is something Jerry feels strongly about.
He points to the UHY Forum as one of the network's most successful initiatives for identifying and developing emerging leaders.
"I think our UHY Forum is really strong, and it's been around for more than 20 years."

The Forum has helped hundreds of young professionals develop leadership skills, build international connections and broaden their understanding of the network.
However, Jerry believes there is still more that can be done to encourage engagement from younger professionals.
"The area where we can continue to improve is getting younger people more engaged."
Whether through conferences, working groups, marketing initiatives or cross-border projects, he believes the network benefits when younger people actively participate and build relationships early in their careers.
Those connections not only strengthen individuals but also strengthen the network as a whole.
Navigating an industry transformation
Like many leaders across the profession, Jerry recognises that technology is reshaping the future of accounting and advisory services.
"We're going through an industry revolution right now with AI."
While the long-term impact of artificial intelligence is still unfolding, Jerry believes collaboration will play an important role in helping firms adapt successfully.
"What that looks like exactly in the future, I'm not sure. But I do know that the more we collaborate on tools like this, the better off we're going to be, and the stronger we're going to be."
Despite rapid technological change, Jerry remains convinced that people will continue to play a central role in professional services.
Throughout his career, he has championed the role of accountants as trusted business advisers rather than simply technical specialists. Supporting clients through growth, succession planning, acquisitions and strategic decision-making requires judgement, communication and strong relationships, qualities that technology alone cannot replicate.
The power of working together
When asked about his most memorable experience within UHY, Jerry highlights an example that reflects one of the network's defining characteristics.
For him, seeing collaboration strengthen between the UK and US firms stands out as a particularly significant milestone.
"I think there was a period when we weren't collaborating as much as we could have. Seeing us collaborate the way that we do now has probably been the most memorable thing for me."
That experience reinforced his belief that relationships are one of UHY's greatest competitive advantages.
When firms work together, share opportunities and learn from one another, everyone benefits, including clients.
It is this collaborative spirit that Jerry believes continues to set UHY apart.
Defining excellent client service
Despite his extensive experience advising businesses of all sizes, Jerry's definition of excellent client service remains simple.
"It's proactive, really great communication."
While technical excellence is expected, he believes many challenges can be avoided through clear, timely and open communication.
"99% of the problems we run into come down to communication."
For Jerry, building trust means keeping clients informed, setting clear expectations and maintaining strong relationships throughout an engagement.
Those principles become even more important when clients expand internationally.
Over the years, he has supported numerous businesses entering new markets and has seen first-hand how valuable trusted local knowledge can be.
"Learning how to do business in another country is critical. Having trusted partners internationally makes a huge difference."
The ability to connect clients with trusted professionals around the world remains one of the most valuable benefits of being part of a global network.
Looking ahead with confidence
As UHY celebrates its 40th anniversary, Jerry remains optimistic about the future.
What excites him most is the talent emerging across the network. He is encouraged by the enthusiasm, curiosity and energy they bring to the organisation.
"We have a ton of really great talent. They come to these events with a tremendous amount of energy."
Having spent decades helping businesses grow and adapt, Jerry believes the willingness to embrace change will remain a critical characteristic for future leaders.
Helping the network move forward
Asked what legacy he would like to leave within UHY, Jerry's answer is straightforward.
"I'd like to be remembered as someone who helped the network move forward."

It is a simple statement, but one that reflects a career dedicated to supporting clients, strengthening relationships and investing in future generations of leaders. Through his contributions to UHY International and the wider profession, Jerry Townsend has helped shape a network that continues to evolve while remaining true to the values that have defined its success for the past 40 years.
