UHY GLOBAL JANUARY 2019 PERSONAL PROFILE

A STRONG VOICE FROM THE MOTOR CITY

Meet UHY's new chairman, Rick David, whose passion for the job and for his home city is clear for all to see. When Rick David, chief operating officer, UHY Advisors, Inc., US, took to the stage at UHY’s 2018 Global Annual Meeting in Detroit it was evident that the network’s newly elected chairman was charismatic and passionate about UHY. Rick's personal motto is to maintain a ‘relentless positive attitude’ and colleagues across the business confirm that his capacity to stay focused and enthusiastic about everything he does is impressive. PASSIONATE TO SERVE Rick’s legendary enthusiasm could have been tested when the City of Detroit declared bankruptcy in July 2013, but instead of turning his back on the city he was born in, Rick was determined to play his part in supporting his beloved hometown. Amongst other charitable work he threw himself into voluntary roles, giving advice about economic development, working with civic-minded entities focused on recreating a new Detroit and helping to support area-based arts and other quality of life projects. "Today we have a vibrant city again that is testament to the spirit of Detroit and its people," says Rick. "I am incredibly proud of the progress our community has made and I am excited about its future." Above: Rick and his daughter, with 12 other UHy staff, joined UHY-sponsored America's Thanksgiving Dat Parade 2018 dressed as clowns. His wife, Denise, is pictured in the middle. THE NEXT LEVEL OF SERVICE Determined that accountancy is first a people business and secondly a numbers profession, Rick believes it is the human side of his work that drives excellence. Pride and spirit are at the root of everything that Rick and the rest of the team at UHY Advisors in the US achieve. At work their everyday mantra is to excel by giving the ‘Next Level of Service’ and Rick takes enormous pleasure in supporting the organisation, its people and their culture and values. "This commitment to great service extends to the way I work with my talented colleagues. It’s important for me to nurture exceptional young colleagues and I have to admit that the bright stars of the future keep me on my toes," he says. "I had a wonderful mentor in my early days with a different accountancy network – he taught me to always do and be my best, even when nobody is looking. I try to pass on a similar ethos to the young people I am privileged to support and advise." Contemplating what other careers he might have embarked on, Rick says that law was an attractive alternative because, like accountancy, its success rests on outstanding client service and tailor-made solutions. A LUCKY MAN Growing up in Detroit, Rick’s father ran a grocery and butcher store and one of Rick’s happiest childhood memories is of standing on overturned milk crates to reach the till buttons – "That was my greatest happiness as a little boy," he says. "Perhaps that was the start of me wanting to deal with dollars while interacting with people!" Pictured: Rick with (left to right) his son Alex, wife Denise, and daughter Danielle On a personal level, Rick calls himself a lucky man. Married to Denise for 35 years, he describes his wife as, "my rock, my coach, and my biggest fan. I look forward to the next 35 years together." His children, Danielle and Alex, are both graduates of Northwestern University. His daughter lives and works in New York City and is soon to get married. His son recently left his first post-college job to work for an exciting start-up enterprise based in Chicago. "I am immensely proud of them both," says Rick. "They are wonderful people, hard workers and family oriented. I am so proud of the young adults they have become. We have a lot of fun together and Denise and I are excited that our family is growing and our future son-in-law is a fantastic man." At home, Rick relaxes by sinking into his favourite chair with thrillers by authors such as Brad Meltzer, Vince Flynn or Brad Thor or a historical biography. "We can always learn from past leaders and often their experiences are humbling and motivational at the same time. I think I will always prefer the experience of a ‘real’ book rather than reading off a tablet," he says. "So much of our life is acted out on screen these days." He also loves spending time with his identical twin brother and best friend. "We have a great time together, typically attending local sporting events. I enjoy rooting for my University of Michigan Wolverines but my brother Rob is a Michigan State University Spartans fan. We obviously have different standards when it comes to college sports!" While in college Rick spent time working as a production assistant for televised sporting events. Sometimes he was in the announcers’ booth as a stage manager, other times he was on the field or in the production trucks. "With live sports broadcasts you never know what to expect and you have to keep your wits about you at all times – I suppose that was great early training for what I do now!" A VISION FOR THE NETWORK Hoping to harness his ability to respond positively and with real impact to any new situation Rick looks forward eagerly to his time as chairman of UHY. "Our Board is comprised of outstanding business executives, each of them proven leaders in their own areas. It is humbling to sit at the head of the table to chair our meetings, helping to guide our discussions towards continued network success. "Our network gives member firms the opportunity to share knowledge of new developments and provide referrals with offices across the world. Utilising these links also allows us to develop the next generation of leaders in accountancy. "As business becomes more globalised, our industry has to 'think local, go global.' Even though we may be focused on serving clients in the dynamic middle market, they too must maintain a global focus. Being part of a dynamic international network will help us to build relationships with clients and serve them by tapping into a wider bank of worldwide expertise so they can grow confidently on the global stage. I am thrilled and honoured to be part of the team who will help to steer this agenda." CREDENTIALS As well as being a well-respected auditor and business adviser, Rick has also been an accountancy profession regulator and standard setter. With more than 40 years experience in the industry, Rick has worked with clients from multinational corporations to smaller entrepreneurial enterprises. He also sat on the Michigan State Board of Accountancy and the Professional Ethics Executive Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). You can read a full biography of Rick’s professional and civic activity past and present – including awards and accreditations – here, on the UHY website. 60 YEARS OF MOTOWN Detroit, 1959. With a USD 800 loan, 30-year-old Berry Gordy Jr established his Tamla Record Company, named after Debbie Reynolds’ famous hit song ‘Tammy’. It was to be the start of one of the world’s most enduring musical empires. Later that year, he established Motown as a record label, famously combining Detroit’s motor industry heritage, with a more soulful recasting of the city as a ‘town’. Gordy, an ex-boxer, ex-car worker and ex-soldier, but also a talented songwriter, had found his niche as a musical entrepreneur. A year later, Motown’s roster of artists included Barrett Strong, Mary Wells, The Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye, and the Miracles (featuring Smokey Robinson). By the end of 1961, the Supremes, the Temptations, and Stevie Wonder, had all signed. The rest is history. For a full Motown timeline, visit the Motown Museum website, where you can also read the full Motown story and more about Berry Gordy Jr.
